Non-skippable video interstitial
Non-Skippable Video Interruptive Interstitials · experience 22 of 23
In an app, it is a full-screen video ad that appears by surprise and has no button to skip or close. The person is forced to watch it to the end.
Understand it in 1 minute
This is a full-screen video ad that appears at an unexpected moment in the game or in a stretch of content, when the person chose to do something else or is already doing something else, and that cannot be skipped or closed. The person is stuck until the video ends. It is like standing in a line, with someone closing the door and only opening it when they finish talking.
The Coalition for Better Ads tests included four versions of this case: a 15-second unskippable video before the game or content, a 15-second unskippable video during the game or content, a 15-second unskippable video at the end of the game or content, and an unskippable video at the end of the game or content. Note that even the end of the level appears in the tests for this rule when the video cannot be skipped.
There is only one official exception. According to the Coalition, unskippable interstitial videos that appear after the score screen did not fall below the standard for apps. So, for a video that cannot be skipped, the only moment the official page accepts is after the score screen. A video that can be skipped or closed does not fit this definition, because the rule talks about a video that can be neither skipped nor closed. But be careful: if that video appears at the start of a level or of a piece of content, it falls under the rule for interrupting interstitial video.
Allowed
- An unskippable video that appears after the score screen.
- A video that can be skipped or closed: it is outside this rule (but, at the start of a level or a piece of content, it falls under the rule for interrupting interstitial video).
Not allowed
- A 15-second unskippable video before the level or content starts.
- A 15-second unskippable video in the middle of the level or content.
- A 15-second unskippable video at the end of the level or stretch of content, but not after the score screen.
- A full-screen video that can be neither skipped nor closed and appears when the person is already doing something else in the app.
In practice
Imagine a news app that shows a 15-second, full-screen, unskippable video ad every time the person opens an article. They chose to read and are stuck until the video ends. This is the unskippable interstitial video. According to the official page, the only accepted moment for an unskippable video is after the score screen.
Why it's annoying
Not being able to skip or close in the middle of use is what annoys people most in apps.
How to fix
- Allow skipping.
- Show it only after the score screen.
- Prefer an optional rewarded ad.
