Video that jumps and becomes sticky
Sticky, Pop-Out Video Ads · experience 15 of 23
A video ad starts playing by itself in the middle of the text. When you scroll and it leaves the screen, it jumps to the footer and stays there, covering the content.
Understand it in 1 minute
This is a video ad that starts playing on its own and, at first, appears inside the text (in-line). When the person scrolls and the video player leaves the screen completely, the ad detaches, moves to the bottom of the screen and starts to move down along with the person as they scroll. In doing so, it covers the content. It is like a little dog that follows you around the house and is always in front of your feet.
The Coalition for Better Ads tested two versions of this format: the video that "jumps" and stays fixed with a close button, and the video that "jumps" and stays fixed without a close button. Both fall under this rule. So having an "X" on the detached video does not take the ad out of the case described.
A video ad that stays in its place inside the text, and simply leaves the screen when the person scrolls, is different: it does not detach or follow the scroll. Video ads that play before (pre-roll) or in the middle (mid-roll) of a video related to the page's own topic are also left out of the measurement. When checking, open the page on a phone, let the video start and scroll until the player leaves the screen completely. If the video ad ends up stuck at the bottom and follows the scroll, the page is in the case described by the Coalition.
Allowed
- A video ad in the text that stays in place and leaves the screen when the person scrolls.
- A video ad that only plays when the person presses play and does not detach from the text.
- Pre-roll or mid-roll of a video related to the page topic: not part of the measurement.
Not allowed
- A video ad that starts on its own in the text and, when the player leaves the screen completely, moves to the bottom and follows the scroll.
- The same video detached at the bottom of the screen, even with a close button.
- The same video detached at the bottom of the screen, without a close button.
- A detached video ad that follows the person and covers the text while they read.
In practice
Imagine a cooking blog with a video ad in the middle of the recipe. The video starts on its own and, when the person scrolls and the player leaves the screen, it detaches and stays stuck at the bottom, following the scroll and covering the ingredients. This is the video that "jumps" and stays fixed. If the video stayed in its place inside the text and left the screen normally, it would not be this case.
Why it's annoying
The video leaves its spot and starts following the person, covering part of the text they're reading.
How to fix
- Turn off the “stick on scroll” mode in the ad player.
- Or keep the video small with an immediate close option.
- Check that the player plugin doesn't turn this on by itself.
