Sticky video + large ad in the text
Sticky Video Ad with Large Inline Ad · experience 16 of 23
Two things together on the same page: a video ad that plays by itself stuck to the bottom of the screen, and a very large still ad in the middle of the text.
Understand it in 1 minute
This is a combination of two ads on the same mobile page. The first is a video ad that plays on its own at the bottom of the screen and stays in that same position while the person scrolls. The second is a large static ad inside the text, of size 300×600 or larger. When both appear together, the page falls under this rule. It is like walking down a narrow sidewalk with a parked car in front of you and a huge sign in the middle of the path at the same time.
The official size is 300×600 or larger, and the Coalition for Better Ads talks about a static ad in the text. The official page gives no other sizes or numbers for this case. So the check has two questions: is there a video ad that plays on its own and stays stuck at the bottom of the screen while scrolling? And is there, on the same page, a static ad of 300×600 or larger in the middle of the text? If both answers are yes, the page is in the case described.
If one of the two pieces is missing, the page is not in this combination. A 300×600 in the text without a sticky video, or a sticky video with in-text ads smaller than 300×600, are outside this specific rule, but the other rules still apply, such as ad density. Also left out of the measurement are video ads that play before (pre-roll) or in the middle (mid-roll) of a video related to the page's own topic.
Allowed
- A static 300×600 ad in the text, with no sticky video on the page (the other rules still apply).
- A sticky video at the bottom of the screen with in-text ads smaller than 300×600 (the other rules still apply).
- A video ad in the text that is not sticky, together with a 300×600.
- Pre-roll or mid-roll of a video related to the page topic: not part of the measurement.
Not allowed
- A sticky video ad at the bottom of the screen, playing on its own, together with a static 300×600 in the middle of the text.
- A sticky video ad at the bottom of the screen together with a static ad larger than 300×600 in the text.
- A text block showing a static 300×600 while the sticky video follows the scroll on the same page.
In practice
Imagine a gaming site open on a phone, with a video ad playing on its own stuck to the bottom of the screen and, in the middle of the text, a static 300×600 ad. Both appear on the same page, and this is exactly the combination described by the Coalition. If the text block showed only ads smaller than 300×600, or if the video were not sticky, the page would leave this combination.
Why it's annoying
A huge ad in the middle of the text plus a sticky video leave little room for the content.
How to fix
- On mobile, swap the 300×600 for a 300×250.
- Or remove the sticky video while there's a large ad on the page.
- Review the accepted sizes in each block in Ad Manager.
In ConsentMode
Finds 300×600 or larger spaces in the code. The sticky video is checked by hand.
